Hypatia was a mathematician, astronomer and philosopher of Late Antiquity. She taught in Alexandria, championed free inquiry and brought science and philosophy into dialogue during a period of profound political and religious upheaval. Widely regarded as one of the greatest intellectual figures of the ancient world, her public murder in AD 415 has often been seen as a symbolic turning point, marking the end of the classical intellectual tradition and the beginning of the medieval era.
